THE GAIETY CLUB

PLACE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

About a month ago the Gaiety Club was opened by the Y.W.C.A. in Cuba Street, as one means of meeting present difficulties by giving young people, g^rls, and their friends, somewhere to go and something better to do than fill in time in the streets. It has been a great success, with a membership already far ahead *)f expectations.

At an "at home" given this 'week by Mrs. J. S. Martin and the committee of the club, Mr. D. A. Ewen, chairman of the advisory board of the Y.W.C.A., spoke of the magnitude of the task undertaken by. the association m launching out on this new experiment to supply another recreational centre for the young people of the city. Alterations and equipment costing approximately £1700 had not deterred the directors, because of their conviction of the need for such a centre to cater for the leisure time of the younger girl and her boy friend. Mr. Ewen said he felt sure that public support would be forthcoming, particularly from many employers who were concerned for the welfare of their young workers.

Mrs. J. S. Martin said that the Gaiety Club was the result of nine months' planning and hard work. The committee was greatly indebted to many friends - who had co-operated in getting the work under way, as well as to more than one hundred women who had come forward to take their turn as voluntary helpers.
