An informative paper on "Coal and Coal Mining" was read by one of the members (Mrs. Outhwaite) at the recent meeting of the Women's Study Circle. One of the earliest references to coal, she stated, was recorded by "Theophrastus," writing about 334 8.C., and the earliest record of coal mining in England was 1217. Crippled Children Society. Shakespeare's great Roman tragedy "Coriqlanus" was heard for the first time in Wellington last week, when the Wellington Shakespeare Society held its monthly meeting at the Turnbull Library. The play ■ was directed by Mr. C. G. Bloore. The powerful leading parts, "Coriolanus" and "Volumnia." were played by Mr. F. V. O. Francis and Mrs. C. G. Bloore respectively, and others in the cast were Miss Reilly, Miss Cara Hall, Messrs. Pears, Hankins, Nicol, and Cordery, Mr. and Mrs. S. F. McLean, and Mrs. Harvie; The character of "Menenius" was read by Mr. C. G. Bloore, while stage directions and explanations of the scenes were in the hands of Mr. H. F. yon Haast.
