TAXI HOLD-UPS

INQUIRY BEING MADE

Commenting on complaints by Wellington taxi drivers that they had been subjected to abuse and assaults by servicemen the Minister of Transport (Mr. O'Brien) stated that he was carefully inquiring into the matter, and that all steps necessary would be taken to protect taxi men in carrying out their duties. A conference is being held this afternoon between the Minister, the Commissioner of Transport (Mr. G. L. Laurenson), and representatives of the Taxi Control Committee, the City Council, Police, and American authorities to discuss not only the reported occurrences but wider questions of use and control of taxis.

In several respects the work of the Taxi Control Committee has not resulted in the improvement which had been hoped for.
