NEW YORK, August 7.

The righting operation of the liner Normaridie started today and is progressing according to schedule. A Navy Department spokesman said that 356 portholes had been closed, 5447 square feet of deck openings patched, and 6000 tons of debris. 5000 tons of superstructure, 80001b of glass, and 10,000 cubic yards of mud have been removed. The Normandie will be lifted from the angle of 79 degrees at which she has lain for eighteen months to an angle of 45 degrees, after which she will be moved to a slip for reconditioning. The total salvaging cost is 3,750,000 dollars. Reconditioning is expected to take nine months and will cost a further 20,000,000 dollars. The engines are still serviceable. The Navy Department believes that the tremendous salvage operation is worth while, inasmuch as the Normandie will be restored at less than half her original cost of 59,000,000 dollars.
