ADVERSE BALANCE

ON OVERSEAS TRADE

Returns of overseas trade for twelve months ended June 30, 1943, issued by the Customs show a balance against the Dominion represented by the excess in value of imports over exports. The amount is relatively small at £470,000, but it is in sharp contrast to the position as it was at the end of twelve months, July to June, 1942, when exports exceeded imports by £22,661,000, and for the preceding twelve months, ended June 30, 1941, when the balance on the right side of the Dominion was £19,581,000.

Returns for June, 1943, only, are exports £4,555,000 and imports £7,709,000, showing a debit trade balance of £3,154,000; but the exigencies of shipping may easily affect returns of exports and imports for a single month and the produce export year is generally taken to end at June 30. However, the returns for six months ended June last show an excess of imports over exports amounting to £8,726,000, the returns being exports £33,644,000 and import's £42,370,000, whereas the trade balances in favour of the Dominion for the first halves of 1942 and 1941 were £18,949,000 and £14,600,000 respectively. The returns for the full twelve months for the past three years are as follows:—

Although imports are restricted and have been so since December, 1938, allowance has to be made for higher prices for most imported goods, also for the import of goods required for war purposes. The above values are expressed in terms of New Zealand currency.
