CRIPPLED HALIFAX
Rec. 1 p.m. LONDON, August 6. A New Zealander, Pilot Officer W. E. Elder, D.F.M., brought back a crippled Halifax with one of his crew dead and two others wounded after bombing Hamburg. German fighters attacked the Halifax as soon as its bomb load had been released, killing the mid-upper-gunner and putting the port engine ■ out of action. The crew fought off the fighters. Pilot Officer Elder kept his knee pressed against the control column j throughout the return flight of 360 miles. He ordered * the unwounded j members of the crew to bail out when the plane was over England, because he feared a dangerous crash landing, but he made a belly landing without further hurt to the two wounded airmen. . Pilot Officer Elder, who was awarded the D.F.M. for continuing a bombing flight to Krefeld when his plane was severely hit and then returned homeward safely, heard that he had been commissioned just before he started for Hamburg.
