MUNDA CAPTURED
JAPANESE BURNED OUT
NEARLY ,1700 DEAD COUNTED LONDON, August 6. The Allies have captured Munda, robbing the Japanese of their most advanced air base in the South-west Pacific. This is the first objective to be attained since the new Pacific offensive began at the end of June. The importance of Munda to the enemy was shown by the terrific fight which. the Japanese put up to hold it. Every yard of ground was bitterly contested and the Americans had to use flame-throwers and literally burn the Japanese out of their defensive earthworks. / The special communique announcing the fall of Munda says that nearly 1700 Japanese dead have already been counted. Correspondents report that it is unlikely that many of the defenders got away because of the blockade thrown around New Georgia Island by light naval craft.
