LENT DURING WAR
U.S. SHIPS FOR BRITAIN
NEW YORK, August 3. Officials of the Maritime Commission, commenting on Mr. Churchill's statement that the Americans are transferring between 150 and 200 ships to the British flag, emphasised that the merchantmen are not outright = gifts but are lei\t for the duration of the war. Compensation will'be collected, since the loan comes under lend-lease, but in every case the ship's title will remain in the United States.
While Mr. Churchill did not know what types of vessels were being transferred, the Maritime Commission said that both the older Liberty ships and the newer and faster Victory ships were involved.
