ART & LITERARY CONTESTS
Open to members of the three fighting services, an art exhibition and a literary competition has been promoted by the Army Education and Welfare Service in conjunction with the National Broadcasting Service. The closing date for the art exhibition is September 30. 1943. Eligible personnel include those demobilised from overseas and resident in New Zealand. Time has precluded the extension of the field of entry from farther than the Pacific, but eligible work which has been sent to New Zealand may be included. Oils, water colours, black and white sketches, etchings, and cartoons comprise the classes.
The literary competition is in five classes—a radio play not longer than 30 minutes, first prize, £21, second prize £10 10s; short story, 3000 words maximum; descriptive sketch, maximum 1500 words, for which it is suggested that this might 'include or take the form of an imaginary letter to England describing some phase of wartime conditions, life, and activities in New Zealand; narrative poem, 500 lines maximum; lyric poem,- minimum 20 lines, maximum 50 lines. These lastnamed four classes carry first prizes of £10 10s, and second prizes of £5 ss. New Zealand broadcasting rights in winning entries will vest in the National Broadcasting Service for two years without payment of fees, and publishing rights will also be reserved for two to permit reproduction of winning entries in a war souvenir, if thought desirable.
Entries close on December 1, 1943 addressable by registerel mail to the Director, Army Education and Welfare Service, Featherston Street, Wellington Cl. The name of the author must not appear on a manuscript but a penname should be used, and the author's name and address be placed in a separate envelope, with the pen-name written on it, and forwarded with the entry.
It is proposed to open the art exhibition in Wellington under the title 'Artists in Uniform." If successful, the exhibition will be taken to Auckland, Christchurch, and Dunedin.
