MEN WELCOMED HOME
The Ngaio Town Hall was the scene of a very.enthusiastic "welcome home" to the returned men on furlough, and also to soldiers who have returned previously. The evening had been arranged by the Ngaio Women's Patriotic Branch, and the hall was crowded 1 "with relatives and friends of the soldiers. These 33 men received a wonderful welcome as they came forward to the front of the hall. Tributes to the returned men were paid by Mr. L. L. Hills, who also introduced Mr. H. E. Combs (M.P.'for the district) and Mr. N. Lawrence (president of the local R.S.A.). Replies on behalf of the three services were given by D. A. Abbot (Air Force), J. E. Hancox (Navy), and E. L. J. Marshall and D. A. Clarke (Army). A community sing was led by Mr. W. Christian with Mrs. A. R. Christian at the piano, and the Army Signals orchestra played for the dancing. AT TAWA FLAT. The Tawa Flat Hall was filled to capacity when a reception was held there in honour of A. Hale, K. Howe, C. Barker, A. Whitcombe, P. H. Newton, M. Carmine, and E. Mexted, and also in honour of Sergeant J. Wood (recently repatriated from Italy) and all local Second "N.Z.E.F. men on furlough. The entertainment took the form of a social evening and the men took the opportunity of greeting ' old and new friends of the district. Speeches of welcome were given and : the programme included solos, elocution, dancing, sketches, piano-accordion ' and orchestral items. I ENTHUSIASTIC CROWD. : Khandallah residents gave a very ', enthusiastic welcome to local servicemen at preserjt on furlough from overseas at a dance and social evening held in the Khandallah Town Hall. Captain Galloway, M.C., welcomed the returned men, also Sister Doris Waldie, R.R.C., and wished them a very enjoyable furlough. Lieut-Colonel Agar replied on behalf of the men. Items were given by Mr. Morrish, Mr. Sinclair, and Mr. Arcus, Mrs. Galloway and Mr. Morrison being their accompanists. A military band supplied the music for the dancers, and a delicious supper was served by the ladies' committee.
