AIRMEN'S BRAVERY
NORTH AFRICA AND GERMANY
Operations in the victorious North African carhpaign and in the air offensive against Germany are the background to nine new awards to New Zealand airmen serving overseas, states the R.N.Z.A.F. Official News Service. The list includes three men who have since been presumed dead after being reported missing on air operations.
The awards are as follows: —
Distinguished Flying Cross.—ActingSquadron Leader Thomas Campbell McGillivray (death presumed);' Mr. R. McGillivray, Usk Street, Oamaru (f.). Acting-Flight Lieutenant James Kerrow Porteous; Mrs. M. J. Porteous, 126 Great North Road, Grey Lynn, Auckland (W.). Flight Lieutenant Charles William Miller (death presumed); Mr. C. F. Miller, Maxwell Road, Blenheim (L). Flight Lieutenant John Gordon Pattison; Mr. C. Pattison, "The Brow," Waipawa (f.). Acting-Flight Lieutenant Hugh Charles Wilkie; Mrs." M. E. Wilkie, Riverdale Apiaries, Turakina (m.). Flying Officer Dennis Edward Hogan; Mr. E- Hogan, 134 Coates Avenue, Orakei, Auckland (f.). Flying Officer Norman Dumont; Mr. E. L. Dumont, 311 Woolooware Road, Cronulla, Sydney, New South Wales (f.). Distinguished Flying Medal.—Flight Sergeant David Aitken Sibbald; Mrs. C. Sibbald, Courages Road, Amberley, North Canterbury (m.). Sergeant Adam Haddon Thomson (death presumed); Mrs. J. Thomson, 135 Sherborne Street, Christchurch (m.).
Acting-Squadron Leader McGillivray was better known as Don Stirling, former professional -welterweight box' ing champion. The citation to hjs award says: "He has shown exceptional skill as an operational pilot and captain. He has always attacked his target with determination and vigour, undaunted by heavy enemy opposition. Since February, 1941, Jie has taken pari in attacks on many important targets, including Brest, Lorient, Kiel, Hamburg, Essen, Mannheim, and Rostock. He has set a high example to the others of his .flight and squadron."
