SEVEN SQUARE MILES
EXTENT OF DEVASTATION
Rec. 11 a.m. RUGBY, August S Even before last night's fourth shat tering night attack on Hamburg In a little over a week an area of seven square miles—nearly 4500 acres—of the port had been devastated. The area equals almost seven times the area of the City of London.
The damage done to Germany's largest port, second largest city, and building centre of one-third of its Üboats is unparalleled in the history oi air war.
Last night's attack brought the great battle nearer to its decisive stage. The earlier raids had caused great damage to the central part of the city and in the dock area—particularly in the Grasbrook, Tillaed, Ausichleg, and St. George districts. The weight of the attack on July 29-30 fell on the north and east and south-east areas of the city. The fires were still burning last Sunday. 60 hours after the third heavy night attack. Great clouds of smoke had blown away, and it was at last possible for the photographic interpretation departments to make a detailed assessment of the damage. It will be a long time before it is finished, but it is already known that many important places, in addition to those already announced, have been severely damaged.—B.O.W.
