OPERATIONS AT MUNDA
BOMBING IN SOLOMONS
(By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. > Rec. 9 a.m. SYDNEY, August 3. General Mac Arthur's commanique today reports operations in the Solomons. At Munda, it says, our ground forces have made a general advance from 500 to 1200 yards along the whole line, capturing considerable quantities of material.
At Bougainville, in the Buin-Faisi area, our torpedo-bombers and divebombers executed a daylight attack on enemy shipping in the harbour, coordinated with a heavy bomber raid on Kahili aerodrome, our fighters covering both attacks. One large freighter or transport was set on fire, a tanker hit, and eight barges sunk. At Kahili more than 500 bombs were dropped on a concentration of enemy aircraft on the aerodrome, damaging many planes and causing large fires. "In a series of interceptions by enemy fighters one Zero was shot down and one of our fighters lost." At Kulombangra formations of medium and heavy bombers, with fighter escort, attacked enemy positions and supply areas in Webster Cove and Cape Harbour during the day. At night one of our medium units bombed the area.
