ARBOR DAY
PLANTING OF OAKS
In many schools this morning tree planting was done in celebration of Arbor Day, • and talks were given to the children on the value of trees. This afternoon an official observance of the day took place at the railway station, four British oaks being planted on the plots by the Governor-Gene-ral, Sir Cyril Newall, the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr. Parry), the Mayor (Mr. Hislop), and the chairman of the reserves committee (Councillor W. Duncan). This is to be a joint observance by the City Council, the Department of Internal Affairs, the Beautifying Society, and the Wellington and the New Zealand Horticultural Societies.
In recognition of Arbor Day tree plantings by the pupils of Lower Hutt schools took place today in Anderson Avenue, Birdwood Road, and Purser, Pirie, Kauri, Ferguson, Freyberg. Galway, Godley, and Russell Streets. Schools taking part were Boulcott, Epuni, Randwick, Hutt Central, Gracefield, Eastern Hutt. Waiwhetu, Waterloo, Catholic Primary, and Hutt Vallejr High School. The Mayor, Mr. J. W. Andrews, attended the plantings, and addresses to the children were delivered by the Revs. J. E. Lopdell, F. J. Parker, and Davies, Messrs. McLean Smith, J. Mitchell, and W. H. Wilson. The plantings were supervised by Mr. E. Hutt, superintendent of reserves.
