"USE WHAT WE HAVE"
RATIONING NEED DOUBTED O.C. PALMERSTON N., This Day,
"Before we talk of meat rationing I think we ought first to be sure that we are making the best use of what we have," commented Mr. J. B. S. Budding (Marton) at a meeting of the Wellington central provincial executive, of the Farmers' Union. He said ox beef in the district was still quoted at 35s per 1001b, which did not disclose an abnormal demand. He thought it a great mistake to talk about rationing of meat when we were wasting so much. Meat schedules gave no clue to any situation which would suggest a need for rationing. Mr. V- B. Short (Feilding) felt that if rationing was called for there should not be any need for the continuance of the levy on lamb to subsidise the old ewe. There appeared to be a strong demand for ewe mutton today, and the position, in face of the threat of rationing, called for investigation.
It was resolve.;Lio recommend to the Meal Board electoral committee that there should be an immediate review of the country's meat position with the object of eliminating any waste and also a review of the existing meat schedules with the idea of increasing production of all edible meats.
