DOMESTIC HELP
SCHEME RECOMMENDED
A conference of representatives of women's organisations convened by the Minister of Health (Mr. Nordmeyer) to discuss the question of domestic assistance opened in Parliament Buildings today. Various private schemes now in operation for providing help in the home were explained by the delegates and discussed by the meeting, which agreed that although some wonderful service was being given under those schemes they were unable to satisfy the rapidly-increasing demand. A long discussion took place on what steps should be taken to institute a comprehensive scheme both with the object of coping with the present emergency and also of laying a basis for solving the long-term problem. Before adjourning for lunch the delegates unanimously agreed, as individuals nbt necessarily binding their organisations, upon the following resolution:—"That a comprehensive scheme of providing domestic assistance be recommended to the Government under a Government Department and working through local advisory committees of women, utilising as far as possible the services of existing voluntary welfare organisations."
