ALLEGED ROBBERY
JURY FAILS JO AGREE A new trial will be held next'week in the case of Frederick James Cecil Vallis, soldier and coachbuilder, 35, who pleaded not guilty in the Supreme Court yesterday afternoon to a charge of robbing an American serviceman, Isaac C. Powell, of a wallet containing 60 dollars and personal papers and immediately afterwards using violence. Other counts were theft of the wallet and assault, and these also were denied by the accused. After four hours' deliberation the jury failed to agree. The prosecution, as outlined by Mr. W. H. Cunningham, alleged that the robbery occurred in Cuba Street and that in attempting to prevent it the American was struck heavily, about the face. It was also alleged that after the occurrence two policemen saw the accused throw away the wallet. Powell, in evidence, said that he was knocked down more than once. The policemen also gave evidence. Mr. C. A. L. Treadwell, who appeared for the accused, did not call evidence, but said that the Crown had not proved that the accused had robbed or assaulted Powell. Some other man must have 'done so.
