WAR FUNDS

NATIONAL COUNCIL The loyal and conscientious manner in which members of the National War Funds Council had discharged their duties was referred to by the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr. Parry) in openj ing the council's twenty-eighth annual meeting. Many of those present had I been members since the inception of the council and deserved full recognition for services given during that long period. The Minister felt that those who had subscribed to the fund could be well satisfied with the control. The assets were such that, during the post-war stage, assistance would be available especially to the elderly type who would then certainly need it. In mentioning various aspects of the work, the chairman (Mr. L. O. H. Tripp) stressed the advantages of having a central fund. Several societies whose funds were exhausted had. been i substantially assisted by the council, and there were others whose diminished funds had been handed over to the council, which had committees in various districts to look after the soldiers and their dependants. The joint committee of the Wellington War Relief Association and the Metropolitan Patriotic Committee was, he said, working particularly well, and much time and expense were being saved in dealing with claims, concerning which the Relief Association had nearly 15,000 files relating to soldiers of the 1914-18 period. Help in other directions included that given to widows of soldiers and to blind soldiers and exsoldiers. The, financial statement showed assets totalling £80,483, including trust funds. A vote of £2500 was authorised for special relief. The £200 grant made available by the Government was disbursed by branches of the South African War Veterans' Association. Special tribute was paid to the services given by Mr. Tripp.
