WAKE AND KISKA
AMERICAN ATTACKS LONDON, July 28. The United States Navy Department states: "In the Central Pacific, Liberators again attacked Japanese positions on Wake Island. Approximately twenty-five Zero fighters intercepted the Liberators, and seven of the Zeros were destroyed, five probably destroyed, and three others damaged. Despite heavy anti-aircraft fire, bombs were placed on the designated targets. All the United States planes returned safely, and there were no casualties among the United States personnel. "In the North Pacific on Monday a flight of Liberators, Lightnings, and Warhawks carried out thirteen bombing attacks on Japanese installations at Kiska. Fires were started and explosions observed on the north and south heads, and the runway, bivouac, and submarine base sections of Gertrude Cove and Little Kiska. Individual targets in these areas were also strafed. Warhawks and Lightnings carried out six other bombing attacks at Kiska and hits were made in the bivouac area. The weather conditions precluded' full observation of the result." •
