ISSUE OF PYJAMAS

Are patriotic organisations justified in providing pyjamas to New Zealand soldiers back on furlough? asked Mr. N. Bain (Wanganui) at a meeting oi the Wellington Provincial Patriotic Committee yesterday. Men who had returned .to Wanganui were unable to buy then! in the shops, but a number of suits, which had already suffered from storage, were available from Red' Cross and E.P.S. first-aid posts. Mr. E. C. Hale (Wellington) said that the matter was wider than one of handing out. pyjama suits. Some of the men had spent their money and the R.S.A. was being asked to help them with clothes so that they could go back to civil work while they were in New Zealand. That, he said, was a prohCem, because such clothes would be scrapped when the men returned to service in October. It was a question whether patriotic bodies were justified in advancing money for such a purpose. The meeting thought that the acquisition and distribution of pyjamas could be considered a fair charge on patriotic funds, each committee to act as it thought best after looking into each case. The Prime Minister (Mr. Fraser) said last night in the House of Representatives that he would endeavour to arrange for a debate on foreign policy - before the session ended. Kevin Snow, a-child .living in Sandiford Street, Trentham, was taken to hospital by the Free Ambulance last evening suffering from bums on the face and arms, caused when a plate of hot soup was upset . „ _ • : -
