BATTLE FOR SICILY
LIMITED PROGRESS
ALLIES IN THE CENTRE LONDON, July 27.. The position in Sicily, as given in today's communique, is as follows: In the north, operations' are proceeding according to plan; in the centre, limited Allied progress has been made after heavy fighting; in the east, there, is patrol activity. A correspondent says that Canadians and Americans, in the central sector, drove off a strong German attempt to break through the Allied lines. The enemy had to withdraw after suffering heav3 r losses. The same correspondent reports that German troops are now stiffening the Axis resistance in the north. The Americans have occupied a coastal town about 50 miles east of Palermo. . , Allied air activity yesterday was restricted. ■ Allied planes have continued to attack Sicilian harbours, and on the Italian mainland a railway centre on fhe main line from Naples to the south was bombed. v In addition to those mentioned previously, 11 enemy aircraft were destroyed during the day, for the loss of three Allied panes.
