POST-WAR RELIEF

OFFER TO GOVERNMENT Readiness to collaborate with the Government in plans for -post-war relief was indicated by the New. Zealand Red Cross Society, through delegates, when that- aspect of -future activity was under consideration at the annual conference yesterday. Post-war " relief planning, •it was stated, was regarded as an international Red Cross function, and already certain plans were being carried ou^t. For its part the New Zealand societywas prepared to do its utmost, and it was decided by the conference that the whole of the society's organisation be offered ,to.the Government in connection with post-war relief planning. \ • ..:■■'■'■ Another question relating to postwar reconstruction was raised in an Otago remit. A simplification of training to place it more within the reach of women in the country districts ; was advocated. In this connection- the Voluntary Aid Council had already set up a committee to control the standard of examinations. The Otago proposition was adopted. Officers elected for the ensuing year included the following:—President, Sir R. Heaton Rhodes; chairman of the Dominion executive, Mr. C.. G. White;; Dominion executive, Mesdames W. G. Tweedy (Timaru) and M. H. Tripp (Geraldine), Messrs. C. V. Smith (Dunedin). N. Lee (Wairarapa), J. D. Campbell (Invercargill), G. T. Paterson .(Auckland), and C. H. Chapman, M.P. (Wellington), and Majors „ J. Abel (Wellington), and A. "E.-Gibbons (Waikato); hon. treasurer, Mr. J, T. Spears (Wellington); hon. solicitors, Messrs. Young, Courtney, Bennett, and Virtue. Mr. Richards, M.P., was nominated as the representative of the Government. Red Cross representatives to the Joint Council. of the Order of St. I John, and the Red Cross Society were elected -as- follows: —Mrs. Tweedy, I Misses H. I. Crooke and M. Havelaar, Majors Gibbons and Abel,,-and Messrs. !A. S. Richards, M.P.. C. V. Smith, L. |O. H. Tripp. C. G. White, J. D. Campbell, G. T. Paterson, and J. T Spears. Colonel Sir Bernard Myers, New Zeai land Red Cross Commissioner for the United Kingdom and representative on the board of governors of the League of fted Cross Societies at, Geneva, was elected a life member of the society.
