FIERCE FIGHTING
NAZIS REPELLED AGAIN
LONDON, July 12,
A Moscow communique says that fighting was particularly fierce in the Byelgorod sector, but the Red Army repelled all German attacks and destroyed 122 more tanks and shot down 18 aircraft.
At the northern end of the salient Soviet troops have kept up their attacks and have thrown the Germans out of two villages. Large panzer groups have made more attempts to widen the 20-mile wedge in the Byelgorod area, but Red Army troops have held the Germans, who have not made any progress. On the sweltering plains both sides are hurling more men and tanks into the intensified battle of the Kursk salient. Moscow says that the Germans were throwing in about 400 tanks at a time at the north end, and although Berlin claims a break through the Russians say they threw the enemy back. Moscow gives an impression of the stubborn fighting in this sector, and according to this afternoon's German communique Russian troops have counter-attacked both east and north of Orel.
There is no fresh news of fighting in the Byelgorod region. In all yesterday's fighting the Russians knocked out 162 enemy tanks and 32 aircraft, Russian bombers have been attacking German lines of communications, and have bombed enemy trains at Byelgorod station, starting fires and explosions.
