WRECKED KAIWARRA
SOLD AT AUCTION FOR £525 "Any better bid? For the last time!" and the wrecked Kaiwarra was sold to a scrap metal dealer for £525 at public auction at Christchurch on Friday, states the "Star-Sun." The cargo, which was originally 5000 tons of Newcastle coal, was sold separately, and brought only £50. The hull, gear, and machinery were sold first, and the successful bidder was Mr. P Lucas, of Christchurch. The bidding opened at £50, and with £25 rises slowly came up to £250. From then on £10 bids were accepted until, the price offered rose to £330. At this stage all but two bidders had been eliminated. The auctioneer said thai £5 bids would be accepted, and the hull was eventually knocked down at £525. There was little competition for the coal, which was knocked down to Mr. L. E. Edwards, a scrap metal dealer, for £50. Neither Mr. Lucas nor Mr. Eclwarers has yet considered how to salvage the purchases. The Kaiwarra was wrecked off Motu* c nau Island on December 4 last.
