Mr. K. L. Usmar, Operations Officer of the Civil Defence Division of the National Service Department, who has joined the Air Force, was farewelled recently by his associates. In making a presentation Mr. J. S. Hunter, Director of National Service, said that Mr. Usmar had shown outstanding ability in organising the training .work of the Civil Defence School of. Instruction. Mr. Hunter's tribute was heartily supported by Colonel C. V. Ciochetto, Regional Commissioner of the Central District.

Members of the City Tramways and Electricity Departments recently farewelled one of their oldest fellowworkers, Mr. A. Connole, underground cables foreman, and presented him, with the best wishes of everyone in the two services, with a wireless set. On June 30 Mr. Connole completed 36 years of service with the corporation, practically all in the specialised work of laying and maintaining underground power cabling, and in that time he helped to build tramways and power systems from very small beginnings. In fact, he began before the tramways were city property, in the horse days of private enterprise, and worked on the first power cables laid on contract for the change-over to electricity before the council took over. The good will of the two staffs and their hopes for a long and happy retirement were expressed by Mr. R. S. Maunder, electrical engineer, and other fellow-workers.
