A FINE OF £40
CENSORSHIP CASE
P.A. PALMERSTON N., July 5. "It is the worst case of its kind I have had to deal with," stated Mr. H P. Lawry, S.M., when fining John D Telford £40 for breach of the censorship regulations. According to the police statement Telford enclosed inside a copy of an illustrated weekly paper a letter giving information relating to the disposition and movements of vessels. The letter was intercepted in the United States, and referred back to New Zealand.
Defending counsel said the letter was one from a proud father with two sons in the Navy in answer to a letter from a relative who had seven members of her family serving in the American forces.
