WHAT U.S. LABOUR WANTS

WASHINGTON, July 4,
The largest American labour union, the United Automobile and Aircraft Workers, a C.1.0. union with nearly 1,000,000 members, has formally proposed that the Government shall operate major industries after the war. The union lias demanded Government or municipal ownership of "monopolistic industries strategically necessary to' the national safety." Organised labour's .first detailed post-war plan includes a 30-hour working week, a-gigantic construction pro■gramme for housing, schools, highways, hospitals, recreational facilities, and public'works, a bonus of-up to 2500 dollars and free education of discharged seryicemen, a world-wide collective security system, continuation of the lend-lease plan after the war for the rehabilitation of all peoples, and councils throughout industries to plan their conversion, to peace, with the Government guaranteeing employment during the change-over.
