AUSTRALIANS IN CHINA
SYDNEY, July 4. A small force of ' Australian commandos travelled hundreds of miles from Burma into the heart of China to teach Chinese soldiers the latest methods of guerrilla warfare. The selected men came from units serving with the Australian Eighth Division in Malaya before its capitulation. They were trained for six months with British commando units near Mandalay before going into China.
The Australians trained the Chinese in the use of all types of explosives, and in sabotage and demolition. Members of the expedition went on operations with Chinese guerrillas, who have good discipline as well as enormous courage, and are well equipped with small arms and tommy-guns. "The Chinese are great fighting people," declared a returned Australian. "With equipment and air support they will beat the Japanese."
