The late Mr. C. S. Smith.
late. Mr. Charles Smith, Clerk of the Otago Provincial Council, and Mrs. Smith, who was a daughter of Mr. George Bell, founder of the "Star." He was educated at the Otago Boys' High School, and started his career as an apprentice to mechanical engineering. He was subsequently appointed to the '•Star" as engineer. In 1902 he was appointed a director of the newspaper and a member of the board of management, and was apppinted managing director in 1924. In 1928, when the company moved to a new site in Stuart Street, he designed the new premises, and in 1927 made an extended visit to England and America to purchase modern equipment. He attended the World Press Conference at Honolulu in 1921 as one of the New Zealand delegates. Mr. Smith was also a member of the Diocesan Trust Board, and a director of Perpetual Trustees Estate and Agency Co., and he also held the office of president of the Otago and Southland Newspaper Proprietor*' Union of Employers. He was a foundation member of the Dunedin Rotary Club, a life member of the Overseas Club, and a prominent member of the Dunedin Bowling Club. As well as a bowler, he was a very keen fisherman. He married Miss Florence Minn in 1898, and there are three sons and a daughter. The sons are Messrs. George Bell Smith, mechanical engineer, Stanley David Smith, secretary to the "Evening Star" Company; and Edgar Charles Smith, A.M.I.C.E. Mrs. Lorna Brathwaite. of Waipukurau, Hawke's Bay, is a daughter.
