TRENTHAM'S NEED

PROVISION, FOR JUMPERS

(By: "Binocular.")

* Recognised as one of the finest racing and training areas in' the Southern Hemisphere, the" Tr'entham racecourse is sadly deficient in one department, the provision for .the -training'•,of hurdlers arid steeplechasers. . Whereas at some' centres there, is a recognised schooling track for hurdlers, trainers at Ttentham ■ have to rely on propping then* charges over- obstacles ■ out on the oval itself without being able to send' the horses along at racing speed throughout.1 The obstacles, both hurdles and brush, ■ are : positioned ■in pairs'l within the oval, and the horses, after negotiating the first two, have to be eased up in order to get into line for those, on :'the opposite side, and it is when preparing to do so at. the south-eastern- end. in particular, that there is a danger of the horses turning too. sharply and doing injury-, to-'-them-selves.. It was just such a mishap that placed Coaster .out»b£ commission, and it is not impossible that Master Lackham suffered ..similarly. On Wednesday morning Colonel Rouge was unable to- turn sharply enough when approaching the second set, with the re- ; suit that'he. found himself right on: top of. the pony : hurdle employed for j giving recruits- their initial education,' and had to" hurriedly take the; low fence at an.angle. Then, on Thursday morning, Irish Morn circled round with rather much pace on after taking the one set of obstacles and his feet nearly went from under him. While it would entail some expense to lay. out a proper hurdling track, with railing, • inside the existing training tracks, their presence .would encourage trainers to develop this side of the game. In the .meantime, Trentham remains very poorly represented in hurdlers and steeplechasers. . : Whiter Sale.— -There are six yearlings to'be offered at the annual winter sale at Trentham next Friday. Two are. by. Golden Eagle (a son of Fairway), and one each by Coronach, Gynerium, Croupier, and St. Boswells. Deceased's Estate. —Owing to :. the deatlv of Mr. C. W. Skill, of. Martinborough, the brood mare Brown Pearl, who won seven races during her active career, is to be offered at Trentham next Friday, - as. will .a yearling by Coronach Brown Pearl. The second of her* produce, this youngster clajms relationship to Te. Kara, winner of the Auckland' Cup, Kahapa, Governor's - Cup, -India, Limarch, A. J.C. St. Leger,;arid Merry-May, Great Northern Oaks. The name of Tomahawk has already; been claimed for. him". Horses in Training.— -In addition to the ■ brood mares ; and yearlings to be offered'at; the \v,inter sale at. Trentham on- Friday,' thef c are a number of racehorsesi including Amigo, Aero King, Benares, Sun Valley, Jay' Bee, Mimetical.Pern, Cheddington, Wortqn, Merger, .Dalesman, .Straight Left, >. For a change he drew • close in and a" smart" jump-put enabled him to assume charge.early and he did not give anything a chance over the final furlong.- ■"■ ' : ', • Requires Time.—Although. he ' has natural brilliance, Fox Cover does not stay = too well meantime. He had the run of the -race -in the First Ruahine Hack Handicap, at Awapuni, but could not pull back .the leader. , No dry, chapped, i 6ug*i[ skin" for you this winter.-v-Get Lemon Gliscd, the all-lemon skin emollient,.
