WITH THE JUMPERS
OPENING DAY AT TRENTHAM
■■-,•■" ' (By "Binocular.") 11 Though'principal "interest at this: period of the year naturally centres in the jumpers, the open .flat events, which cater foivthe type of horse tha. is suited by heavy conditions and-a: higher scale of , weights, will also- attract a large measure of interest at Trentham tomorrow, when the Wellington Racing Club's Winter Meeting opens. In addition to the Wellington Steeplechase and Trentham Hurdles, the tit-bits m the . jumping . branch,. there will be both hack steeples and hurdles events.
•An eight-race programme graces the card, and 'in several instances limit i fields are indicated. Happily enough, the club does not -encourage division j races, and compulsory withdrawals reduced' those events .that were originally in excess of the'safety .number. The first race is set down for 11.28, and the final event f0r'4.15 p.m. 11.28 MARmi HACK A:<D HUNTERS' STEEPLECHASE, £400; about 2Vi miles. The race-has been a pleasing exception in recent years to the general Trentham. rule of outsiders prevailing in the opening event, although last year the favourite was beaten by the thn'd elect. At the head of the handicap, and on i even-terms,-are Bisquit and Half and; Half, both of whom are recent win-! ners, the former at Te Rapa and the j latter at Wingatui. The occasion i marked the first appearance in the role j of Half and Half, and ■ this southerner ] might well go further. Malacca, the I possessor of a good turn of speed, has done fairly well as a hurdler, but has to -prove himself in the* sister branch, and the same applies to' Radiant Bay. Last winter Golden Memory -■ made quite a bold showing in the July Steeples when in at the minimum, but she has failed so far this winter. However, a return to top form would make her a possibility. ■ Valantua's. form has been somewhat uncertain, but this southerner is a likely sort on his day. As a result of his success : in- the Hawke's Bay Steeples Abbey Lv has been raised to 10.5, and even' at that poundage promises to play a prominent role. However, it would not be surprising to find Idle Hour, who ran such a great race in the Manawatu Steeplechase, the actual favourite. The former has,won at his last three starts, whereas Kinneff's best form dates back to his three-year-old days, when his five outings were productive of three wins and two placings. However, his third at Hastings on Saturday rather suggests that he is coming back to form. Foxcatcher and Saturday's winner at Hastings, Killeymoon, are both on the 9.4 mark, with Crispin, another hack- with form to commend him, -21b below. Both Ringcraft and Broiyeine have been .racing unluckily lately, but. Sports' Flash, who is on the same mark as Broiveine, is a fresh horse.; Dash o' Dink, now in the South Inland, has been, placed.in his last four starts, but Josette's form since winning this race last July has been rather uncertain. Promising sorts immediately below are La Fillette, Hunting Charm, Phalaria, Socks, and Silver Coin, and, with a wide field for exploitation, tho favotirite might come from: BROIVEINE, FOXCATCHER, .■■ ■■■.-■. ■■~,VXA FILLETTE.., \. : { ...'. Poutu, a comparative recruit who won his first race/ at Hawke's Bay in Aprils failed at Auckland immediately following. However, he ran a good second to '- Red Glare in heavy going at Awapuni. Khurja has not-had a great .deal of recent racing, but had an outing on the fiat at Hastings on Saturday. The. form of Glaciate was indifferent- at the Manawatu Meeting, but he is liable to come to. hand quickly. On the other hand, Colossal Chief has been racing fairly well without being good enough to* win. Little light can be throvyn 6n the j prospects of Islay Downs,' but, this southerner showed good form on the flat last season. Colonel Bogey has raced unsuccessfully in the higher grade, but' is likely in his own class. Trig-Station has a fund of speed and looks like an improver, as are Borak, First Edition, and Moderate. On the basis of exposed form* strongest support will probably come for: POUTU, TRIG STATION, COLONEL BOGEY. 1.26 : ' : STEWARDS'. HANDICAP, £600 ;• G furlongs. However, histurn is overdue. Then follow Aero King and Theolateral, on terms with 8.13, the latter haying been the winned of his division of the Members' Handicap at Ellerslie last- month. Betterman, runner-up to Kronos in the Visitors' Handicap on the- second day at Auckland, later filled a like placing behind Gaymiss at Awapuni, and as a result he now meets his victor,at Ellerslie on only 21b better terms. Black Robe showed that she is returning to form by running second to Noble Fox at Hastings after experiencing an indifferent run. Fur Coat ran a good third to John Gay and Duncannon at Trentham in January, but failed in the Great Easter1 at Riccarton. Pompit and Grilse are both recent winners, but it is some time since Deolali has raced; indeed, her trainer is rather doubtful whether this brilliant . mare will stand. A winner in the hack classes at Ellerslie, Peter Gregor is a likely lightweight. Sham Boy was a winner at his last start, and . Ring Chief has shown flashes of good form. With plenty of room for a surprise, the logical choice appears to be: WHACKIE, KRONOS, THEOLATERAL. 2.8 •■ ' . '.■.■•■'■•■■■■ • ' WELLINGTON STEEPLECHASE, £1500;. about '6Vi miles. Gold Spot .... A winner of the Winter Steeples on the second day at Ellerslie with 11.10, he was awarded 12.7 at Awapuni, but did not run up to expectations, the extra ground he\covered playing no small part While he may prefer firmer going, this northerner is undoubtedly brilliant The early favourite, Spendthrift, appears to be well worthy of the position, for in his o"nly two starte the Paper, Money gelding has won. In the Great Western Steeplechase, 3 miles, on the first day at Riverton, he outclassed the opposition with 10.11, ano! again scored on the second day in the Riverton Steeples; 2i'miles,• .with.■■•-ll;li.- The
Riverton country is quite formidable,! but the southerner will be meeting! much stronger company here. The in- j .-jury he sustained at Hastings resulted; in the defection of The Dozer, and the field is all the weaker as a result, for he"would-have;been strongly favour*-! cd. Winner of the event in 1940, Chat ,\vas successful in the Great Northern Steeples last month, and then followed Gold Spot home in the Winter Steeples,! having 10.11 on the latter occasion.! Although by no means big, this mare' should be staying on at the close, despite her poundage. Dozie Boy will have to improve, and The Cardinal has hardly ■' fulfilled the big things expected of . him earlier. Nevertheless, there is much to attract about The Cardinal, who has the size and stamina to make good in the role. Of the others, Ennation is at the foot of the handicap, and the veteran will no doubt be battling along at the close. Probably the elect will be: SPENDTHRIFT, CHAT, THE CARDINAL. 2.50 TKENTHAM nUHfi'LES, £750 ; about 1% ..-■■•'■•, . ■ • miles. Black. Colibri is now required to carry an additional 91b, but she still has Black Musk, who should be improving with his racing, and Colonel Rougie, a wellperformed southerner,' above her in the handicap. .Neither Authoress; nor Native Song impressed at Hastings last Saturday, and Imperium could not do better than run fourth. However, an improvement on the part of any of the trio would not surprise. Originally* weighted at 9.9, Talenta now has been advanced to 10.1 as a result of her' win-in the Hawke's Bay Hurdles, and she must be again accorded a great chance. Lapidarian's form has .rather slumped of late, but this northerner is in at a luxurious weight. . By virtue of his win over hurdles at Ellerslie, which was followed by another-iq,,the Winter Handicap at Hastings, Hasten I has come very much into prominence. ! Judged on his effort at Awapuni, where he ran second to The Dozer in the Rangitira Hurdles, Young Charles'cannot be dismissed, but probably strongest support will come for: HASTEN, COLIBRI, BLACK MUSK. 13.32 WHYTJ3 HAIsTHCAP, £1000; 1 mile. •Atuorlad ...... 9 II Platform- ..... 7' 12 Monto Cristo .. 9 5 Minority 7 11 Bashful Lady .94 Sing Sing ... 7 11 •Boloyna '9 3 Centennial .... 7 10 Gayest Son .. 9 I,'Klnvara i 7 9 Landveyor .... 9 0' Prince Shad ..7 9 Centrepoiso .... At the. head df the handicap is Amorlad, who has built up a great record' in the south. There is then a drop of 61b to Monte Cristo, who, after winning the Thompson Handicap here in March with 8.6, returned north to score over seven furlongs at Te Rapa with 9.0. He then filled placings at'his two' essays-at the Great Northern Meeting. Within lib of Monte Cristo is Boloyna, winner of the event last, year'.,under 8.9. The Paper Money gelding has not had much-.racing-'this'term, but-he came, home, very solidly.at.Awapuni, it being his first outing in public since November. He has shown in the past that I-he comes to hand very quickly. Aia- | other with . little recent form to his credit is Gayest Son, but he should be improved with the outings "he had at Riccarton and Awapuni. Landveyor and Centrepoise share the 9.0 mark, and the former may be preferred at the distance. Noble Fox,, a ■ winner over six furlongs at Hastings last Saturday,'must be respected despite his rise of 61b. Then come Poutatau, Alethea, Caroline Bay,. Amigo, The Monarch, Stairway, Duality, and Platform, all of whom- must hold prospects. ..However, the range of possibilities can be earned still further, for among the lightweights is Town Survey, who won the Islington Handicap at Ellerslie in April and more recently the Great Northern Hurdles. Further, being by Surveyor, Town Survey appreciates heavy going. Good though he is, Patu-Po may* require further racing, but Crucible. ■ runnerup to Kinsman last Saturday, is in good order Lower down the scale comes War Effort (who should appreciate the long straight), Madame Rachel, Kaitoa, Young Jim, ' Frustration, Tring, Po-Huka, Lenardo, Ballyneety, Hamish, Midian Star, Regal Night, Ruling Moments, etc., who will all have their friends. It should be a great betting race, for opinions will differ considerably, but form rather suggests: CRUCIBLE, WAR EFFORT, YOUNG JIM. I
