SUNK OFF AUSTRALIA
AMERICAN CARGO SHIP
SYDNEY, July 1.
Japanese submarines have sunk a medium-sized United States cargo ship and damaged i a small United States cargo ship off the east coast of Ausr tralia. These attacks, which are reported in General Mac Arthur's communique today, resulted in 24 personnel being killed or missing and 14 wounded.
; The date of the attacks is not disclosed. The last previously reported sinking by a Japanese submarine off the Australian coast was the hospital ship Centaur on May 14. The cargo ship, sunk burned fiercely after being hit by a torpedo. The water was covered with blazing oil and a boat could be launched only from the port side. .Today's communique reports that an Allied heavy bomber on armed reconnaissance over Dampoer Strait, which separates Rooke Island from western New Britain, sighted and attacked three. aOOO-ton enemy cargo ships. . One was left sinking- and a second ship appeared damaged and deserted .when the aircraft headed for its base
