£23,000,000 IN HAND
WELLINGTON'S RECORD With 74 per cent, of its quota in hand, the Wellington postal district ranks second in the ladder of princi-i pal New Zealand postal districts in; the campaign for the Third Liberty i Loan. Nelson, with a tally of 80 per \ cent., heads the ladder. The Wellington postal district objective is £4,500,000, and the amount subscribed to date is £3,228,748. The l Wellington city total is £2,673,886, of which £179,417 was subscribed yesterday. With some belated figures now to hand, the Dominion total has reached £23,206,419, of which £913,255 was subscribed yesterday. A special display by the Air Force today was of particular interest, a feature being the interception of a formation of "enemy" bombers over the»»harbour by fast fighter planes. the table that follows shows the amounts subscribed to the loan by the various chief postal districts, and the percentages of the objective gained in each district. Then the Minister of j Finance (Mr. Nash) will survey the j results and announce the leading distri3t. There will be" 18 Liberty Loan flags of honour, each made of white silk, with a gold border, and a laurel centre in which will be inscribed a number from 1 to 18. The first district to get its quota will get No. 1 flag? and so on. A; further £100,000 has. been invested by the Auckland Savings Bank.trustees, making the bank's total subscription^ 1,000,000. Afc frequent intervals today, adja-. cent to the. Petone and Lower Hutt Post Offices members of the United States Marine Corps, in camouflage dress, gave demonstrations of the operations on howitzers, anti-aircraft, and anti-tank guns. The demonstrar tions will be given again this evening, under special floodlight conditions, and tomorrow morning. ; Full support for the.war effort was reaffirmed at the last meeting of directors ,of the Wellington Caledonian Society, and the present appeals being made for funds for the wari loan and for national savings were commended to members. As a lead, the directors agreed to invest £100 in national savings. The hope was expressed that all members would contribute to the call for help. ,
