ITALIANS AND THE WAR
MORE SERIOUS VIEW NOW
LONDON, June 28. "Borne ;s ready for the eventual massive bombardments against the city which have- been,, demanded again in the last" few days by the British Press under the pretext of striking against military objectives," says the "Popolo di Roma," "Romans will in no way bei surprised at the carrying out of the threats, and they will react, should the capital be bombed, with the snme courage, firmness, and contempt of danger of which other Italian cities have given proof"
The correspondent of "The Times on the-German frontier .says that the Kobe correspondents of German news-, papers are sending long reports of. the bombing otltalian cities,-first, because the. German readers are greedily interested in what the.people at the other end of the Axis ar r e undergoing when Germany is being - scourged day and night:'and, secondly, because the German authorities want their own people to learn; how "-■ the Italian Government is attempting to cope with, the situation s>and how the Italian people arc reacting* -1- ■;. •' : All correspondents say that Italy has begun Ho take the war more seriously, not1-.-merely because of the invasion threats-but Because of the increasing difficulty1 of transporting food, coal, and other commodities-over railways which are overburdened by the military and reduced by destruction and bombing. The prices of unrationed foodstuffs are soaring, necessitating an increase in civil service salaries, which had been blocked after the outbreak of war.
