RAID IN FORCE
FORTRESSES OVER FRANCE
LONDON, June 28. The United States heavy bombers which raided France this evening went out un force. A communique says that one large formation of Fortresses bombed the U-boat base at St. Nazaire and that another attacked an airfield, starting large fires. The bombing results on both targets were good. There was intense flak and some fighter opposition, and.,the bombers shot down a number of the enemy. RAF Spitfires and United States Thunderbolts carried out supporting operations. Six bombers are missing. British guns opened up a shelling duel across the Straits of Dover late this morning. After they had fired a dozen shells the enemy replied from several points on the French coast With intervals of a minute or so between salvoes, the shooting continued for over an hour.
FOOD ADMINISTRATOR GOES Rec 12 45 p.m. RUGBY, June 28. The United States War Food Administrator, Mr. Chester Davis, has resigned following dissatisfaction over the extent of his authority and his opposition to the Administration's policy of broad general subsidies, states a Washington message. President Roosevelt immediately accepted his resignation. Mr. Roosevelt appointed Judge Marvin N. Jones as successor to Mr. Chester Davis.—U.P.A. and 8.0. W.
