NO NIGHT WORK
WOMEN TAXI-DRIVERS
A statement was issued today by the Minister of Transport (Mr. O'Brien) explaining the regulations gazetted last week for the purpose of pro : hibiting night driving by women taxi drivers. Under the regulations no ■woman taxi driver, after July 22, may drive a cab from half an hour after sunset to one hour before sunrise.
"While under present conditions the Government is desirous of encouraging our women-folk to do everything possible for the purpose of assisting the man-power situation," said the Minister, "nevertheless, the reports received from the Commissioner of Police indicate that this step is a very desirable one in the interests of the drivers themselves. "The regulations also provide that omnibus drivers are placed in exactly the same position asjaxi drivers in regard to their character being a circumstance to be taken into account in granting the driver's licence." • A further provision makes it an o|fence for any person to lend his driving licence to another person.
