BRIDGE WELDING
A New York' message to English newspapers stated recently .that America's Scotland Yard, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, called for the X-ray. Big Liberty cargo ships were "coming apart at the seams." Eight welders in Baltimore shipyards were charged with sabotage. The X-ray had shown that somebody was "bridge welding." Bridge welding leaves air spaces in the centre of two plates. Such welds break under certain strains. The F. 8.1, chief, Mr. Edgar J. Hoover, said that the men, native Americans, had admitted doing faulty welding to finish work in a hurry and earn more money. But the investigation failed to disclose any Axis sympathies. The full extent of the damage was not yot known, Mr. Hoover added. Many structurally weak ships would have gone to sea if the defective welding had not been discovered
