WHALING FATALITY
P.A. BLENHEIM, This Day. John Donald Huntley, harpoon gunner of the Tory Channel whaling fleet, died in hospital on Saturday night as the result of injuries to the head received in Cook Strait on Friday afternoon. He was firing at the fourth whale of a successful day when the shell-case flew back and struck him on the forehead, fracturing his skull. He was rushed to Picton in a fast whalechaser. He was a married man, aged 31, and his home was in Picton. Three New Zealanders serving in the Middle East. H. M. Sansum, C. McNabb (Wellington), and R. Robbins (Wanganui), attended the annual congress of the Palestine Esperanto League, held in Jerusalem in April. Mr. Sansum spoke on behalf of New Zealand Esperantists and said that New Zealand Esperantists who had never been abroad would be pleased to know that Esperanto was a living language that could be spoken and understood by people with no other means of understanding. He was followed by representatives from England, Czechoslovakia, and Poland.
