SALVATION ARMY

DIAMOND JUBILEE To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the commencement of the work of the Salvation Army in Wellington a series of meetings extending over four days was planned by the Corps Commanding Officer of the Wellington Citadel, Adjutant Fred Searle. Commissioner J. Evan Smith, Territorial Commander of the Salvation Army in New Zealand, conducted the weekend gatherings, which commenced on Saturday afternoon with a rally of old identities, some of whom had been connected with the corps ever ! since its opening. Envoy W. Colley, the first captain of the corps, gave some interesting reminiscences of the early days, and many other veterans spoke, including Mrs. Jacobsen, who is 94 years of age, and Major J. Hildretlv the oldest living officer of the jArmy in the Dominion. LAn excellent musical festival was t given at night. At a festival of praise on Sunday afternoon the Wellington South Band and Songsters united with the city combinations in a first-class musical programme. Commissioner Smith led three meetings during the day. Features of Sunday's festival were the enrolment of eight young men and women as soldiers of the Salvation Army and an address by Mrs. Commissioner Smith. A united women's meeting was held this afternoon, Mrs. Brigadier Gray presiding. An address, "Mapriland Mosaics," was given by Brigadier F. ißirks, Training College Principal. To- [ morrow a corps reunion will be held ! with Bx-igadier Chas. Gray in charge.
