GAOL FOR ASSAULT

WOMAN INJURED WITH GLASS Picking up a glass at a party in Tory Street, last evening, Norman Darcy Bryden, labourer, 49, threw it. at another man but missed. The * glassstruck an elderly woman, Mrs. Mary Ellen Ryan, and caused a severe gash in the back of her head, requiring several stitches. Bryden was charged in the Magistrate's Court today with assault and was sentenced to one month's hard labour by Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M. : SenioivSergeant G. Paine said that the accused was a boarder at the house, where a more or less drunken party was held last evening. Everyone was under the • influence of liquor. ■ An argument started' and Bryden threw a glass containing' beer, striking an -old woman on the head. . Police evidence was that blood was pouring from the wound and 'broken glass was oh the floors- Bryden admitted throwing the glass, but maintained all the time that he had not deliberately assaulted the woman. He had thrown the glass at a man. The Magistrate said that the accused had meant to hit someone with the glass, which was an illegal act, and although he might not' have intended to hit the woman his action made him liable. The woman herself wanted! him charged, so shennust have thought J he meant it. ' Bryden did not have a good record. ■ " ,
