VICEREGAL. Government House, Wellington, June 24. His Excellency the GovernorGeneral received Colonel A. Bongard this afternoon. Mr. J. T. Butler, accountant in the Bank of Australasia at Auckland for the past 10 years, has been promoted to the position of inspecting officer, attached to the Wellington office of the bank. He will take up his new position next week. HOME GUARDSMAN CHARGED 111 health was the reason put forward in the Magistrate's Court today by Raymond James Reardon. a Government clerk, for failing to carry out his Home Guard duties, and he was fined £5 and costs by Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M. The police said that Reardon was posted to a unit in May, 1942, and attended regularly until well on in November. Since then six registered letters had been sent to him by the authorities but he had not taken any notice of them and had not paraded since November 26. His explanation was that he had been ill and was totally unfit for anything of a strenuous nature. ' • The defendant said his health had deteriorated over a period of seven or eight months and two months ago he gave that explanation to the adjutant. The Magistrate: What about the six letters you received? You just ignored them, did you?— They have been received after the date of the offences w'th which I'm at present charged. You have not been attending up to now. —1 am not charged with that. You'll be fined £5 and costs for what you are charged with.
