HELP FOR DAIRY INDUSTRY
CANBERRA, June 11
The new subsidy for the Australian dairy industry will be £6,500,000 a year, and to be paid retrospectively from April 1 last, says the Prime Minister, Mr. Curtin. It replaces the subsidy of £2,000,000 a year granted last October, and will be paid for butter, cheese, and milk delivered to condenseries. The Government is anxious that the whole amount of the subsidy should be passed on to the producers to lift the standard of living on dairy farms, stimulate production, and raise efficiency. The Australian Dairy Equalisation Committee is being asked to recommend the method of distribution of the subsidy. Mr. Curtin stated today that action was being taken to prevent an increase in land values. Sales of dairy lands will be subject to control by the Treasurer. The announcement of the subsidy was delayed pending determination by the Arbitration Court of the basic wage for the dairying industry.
