DOMESTIC SERVICE

"I cannot understand why the question of domestic service has not been tackled long before this in a proper manner," said Mrs. Stewart (Government, Wellington West) in the Budget debate in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon. Mrs. Stewart referred to the burden borne by farmers' wives as well as city women owing to the shortage of domestic help resulting from the war. Something should be done to make domestic service attractive to girls and women.

Mrs. Stewart said there was a very great need in Wellington and other towns for more rest rooms for mothers and also more children's centres. In addition there was a pressing need for clubs and hostels for young Maori and pakeha girls. Many of these girls had come from the country to take part in essential work and could not get any other accommodation except that described as "rooming" accommodation.
