TRESPASSED ON LINE
Thirty-two men who took a shortcut across the railway line at Thorndon on their way to work on the waterfront on May 10 were charged in the Magistrate's Court today with trespassing on the line. All pleaded guilty, two "under a certain amount of justification," and Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., imposed a fine of 10s and costs in each case.
Senior-Sergeant Paine said that the men could have crossed the line at two other places, the ramp on the Hutt Road and the Davis Street overbridge, which would have taken them only a few minutes more. The Railway Department had had many complaints about men crossing the line as the defendants had done, and several accidents had been narrowly averted. The maximum fine was £10.
The Magistrate said that although it was the defendants' first appearance for trespassing on the line, it was probably not the first time they had done it. They must have known that they had no right to cross where they did, and the fact that they might have been a little late for work was no justification. They had crossed the line at a risk not only to themselves but possibly to others. As it was a first offence he would fine each man 10s. but there would not be a similar penalty next time.
