HOSPITAL LEVY

MR. CASTLE'S COMMENT

All .associated with hospital administration would be pleased with the Budget announcement that some relief is to "be given to those who contribute to hospital finance through local body rating, said the chairman of the Wellington Hospital Board, Mr. F. Castle, today;

The, increased daily payment of 9s, Mr. .Castle said, Was the figure upon which the Wellington Board had, based its original estimates for 1943-44, adopted on April 19 and forwarded to the Minister of Health for his approval. Though it had been expected that '..'a pronouncement upon some higher rate of social security payment couldfhave been made ,prior to March, 31, the position at the time the tentative estimates were made was not clarified, and in May the Minister replied- ■ that the estimates were not acceptable and called upon the board to rnSke adjustments as upon the old basis of payment. That was done, and the -revised and higher levy and apportionment were adopted by the board at its special meeting last month. Mr. Castle said that he presumed that they iwould now go back to the original estimates, but the board must, of course, await official notification before taking that further step. The Mayor, Mr. Hislop, said that the city :estimates, including the hospital estimates, would come before the City Couniiil next week. Whether the new circumstances would necessitate delay he could not at the moment say. The*-comparison of the levies upon variotis contributing bodies for 1943-44 at the former 6s rate and the increased 9s rate from social security is:
