OBITUARY
MR. WILLIAM TAIT
The death occurred recently at his residence in Berhampore of Mr. William Tait, who had resided in the Wellington district for over 68 years. He was born in the Shetland Islands in 1851, and came to New Zealand in the sailing ship Soukar, landing at Wellington in December, 1874, after a three months' voyage. Mr. Tait spent three years in the lighthouse service, but the remainder of his life was spent in and around Wellington. He was engaged in the building trade till he retired about 25 years ago. At the time of his death he was the only surviving foundation member of the Kent Terrace Presbyterian Church. He never lost his interest in his native islands, which he revisited once. When the Shetland Society of Wellington was formed he was elected its first life member. His wife died nearly ten years ago, and he leaves one son and three daughters, also five grandchildren. One grandson was killed in the present war. and another is serving overseas.
