R.A.F. MINE-LAYING

OPERATIONS IN BALTIC SEA

LONDON, April 29. The Royal Air Force flew out from Britain last night to lay mines on a very large scale in the Baltic Sea, and other aircraft bombed WHhelmshaven. Twenty-three of our bombers did not return. No official reason has been given for last night's operations, but it is known that the R.A.F. is now laying mines on a greater scale than ever before. This mine-laying has an important bearing not only on the U-boat war, but also on the war. Our mines are known to be hampering the> training of U-boat crews in the Baltic, where the Germans are preparing for the next phase of the war on the eastern front.
