JEHOVAH'S WITNESS
MAN-POWER ORDER REFUSED
<„ A . member of the organisation I known as Jehovah's Witnesses, Mary I Anna Thompson, aged 23, was convicted and ordered to pay costs by Mr. A. M. Goulding, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court today for failing "to undertake clerical work in the Post and Telegraph Department, to which she had been directed by the man-pow;er authorities. She pleaded guilty. Mr. E. K. Kirkcaldie said the defendant stated that -,she had made a vow or covenant to serve God all her time, and that to leave the service of God would be contrary to her vow and would lead to her destruction. Her employment was in furthering thework of the society of which she was a member. Mr. Goulding: There are no regulatiohs enabling women to appeal on conscience grounds? !'. Mr. Kirkcaldie: No. That is the difficulty. The regulations do violence to this young lady's conscience and she has no avenue of escape.
