NO SHOOTING

ACTION BY FARMERS

ALLEGED BREACH OF FAITH

(P.A.) WAIROA, This Day. Direct action was decided on at f a meeting yesterday of the Wairoa Farmers' Union over alleged unjust distribution of ammunition for the shooting season. It was stated recently by the local representative, acting for the Minister, that landholders, who were not compelled to take out a licence, would come into the distribution of any ammunition available. As a result of this statement a number of landholders, including a large percentage of Maoris, called at the distributing office yesterday but were there informed that they must take out a licence before they could receive any cartridges. This

the Natives considered a breach oi faith. They held a meeting immediately and decided to prohibit shooting over the areas they control. Later a deputation of Natives waited on the Farmers' Union meeting, which decided to approach Mr. Parry at once and inform him that unless the order for landholders to take out a licence before securing ammunition is cancelled all the farmers will prohibit shooting over their properties. MAY AFFECT MINISTERS. The Deputy Mayor, Mr. M. J. Gemmell, who had undertaken the distribution of ammunition, got in touch with the Minister's secretary by telephone last night and placed the posi-' tion before him. The secretary re-, plied that the Department was determined to stand behind the instructions issued and landholders must take out licences. If the resolution carried by the farmers and Maoris is put into operation there will be practically no shooting in the Wairoa district tomorrow, despite the fact that game appears to be more plentiful than for years past. An interesting' disclosure ai the farmers' meeting was a statement that Messrs. P»rry> Webb, and Semple were coming: to the Wairoa district for the If so, and the farmers and Maoris stand behind their decision, a problem facing the Ministerial party will be where they are going to shoot.
