LATE MR. PAIKEA
PRIME MINISTER'S TRIBUTE
The Prime Minister (Mr. Fraser), accompanied by Mrs. Fraser, visited Ratana Pa on Thursday afternoon, where the body of the late Mr. Paikea has been lying in state. He was received on the marae by the Maori people and paid a tribute to Mr, Paikea's life and work. He also deposited a wreath on behalf of the Government. He*will attend the funeral ceremonies to be held at Ngaruawahia, Orakei, and Otamatea, and also the burial, which is to take place on Tuesday afternoon at Batley. Other members of the Legislature will also be going north for these ceremonies.
In his tribute to Mr. Paikea Mr. Fraser said that Mr. Paikea's whole life wag devoted to service for his country, and the advancement <?f the best and highest interests of both races. Mr. Paikea had been closely associated with the Maori war effort, and its latter development, which had been crowned with such great success, was under his control and direction, New Zealand owed a great debt •of gratitude to Mr, Paikea for the wholehearted and thoroughly efficient leadership he gave to the fine Maori war effort. "His loss is tragic and irreparable," added Mr. Fraser. "I had looked forward to years of collaboration with him in the interests of the Maori people, and I deeply regret his passing away,"
